G-Love, Mraz bring the funk
Riverfront Park in Spokane, WA, with its picture-perfect weather, provided the perfect atmosphere for the upbeat and positive music expertly performed by G Love & Special Sauce and Bruce Cockburn. Judging by what I heard, as well as the reaction of the crowd, it certainly won't be the last time I had ever seen G Love (or even heard of, despite the fact they've been around since the mid-'90s). While the group's music is certainly in the Jason Mraz vein, it leans more to the funk side of the spectrum, whereas Mraz's tunes often steer in the direction of folk and jazz. In short, if you're listening to G-Love and not nodding your head to the beat, there's something seriously wrong with you.
Bruce Cockburn has picked up where Harry Connick, Jr. left off, taking a musical genre many consider to be outdated and making it not only relevant, but sexy again (really, when was the last time you saw thousands of young women swooning during a jazz-laden performance?). Mraz is truly a vocal and lyrical master, aided by an enthusiastic band and one of the tightest horn sections in the business. If you get the chance to see this show, by all means, take it.
My only complaints were relatively minor. The first was the audio mix. The keyboards were far too loud and "tinny" during G Love's set, and there weren't nearly enough highs in the mix during Mraz's set, particularly on the drums (the hi-hat was barely audible). I accept that outdoor venues present unique challenges for a sound tech... that having been said, my second disappointment was that the show was not longer, although I'm sure that had something to do with local noise ordinances. Still, I suppose that is also a testament to how great the show was.
